Mothership: Voyage Into Afrofuturism

MY ROLE
As the Experience Developer on this project, I worked in deep partnership with the curators, designers, artists, and community groups to translate content into meaningful experiences for visitors.

  • I LED THE INTERPRETIVE PLANNING process through Concept, Design Development, and Implementation phases.

  • I OUTLINED THE LABEL HIERARCHY, DRAFTED, REVISED, AND EDITED ALL EXHIBITION TEXT
    to visitor-friendly standards.

  • I DEVELOPED INTERACTIVES AND VISITOR TAKEAWAYS in collaboration with the designer, curator, and community partners.

  • I DESIGNED EXHIBITION FLOW FOR VISITORS, ARTWORK GROUPINGS, AND SECTION LAYOUTS in collaboration with the designer and curator.

  • I IDENTIFIED AND MANAGED KEY PARTNERSHIPS with Wakanda Dream Lab, an incarcerated graphic novelist, and the Black Cultural Zone, turning their ideas into exhibition experiences.

This temporary exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) was on view 2021-2022.

Afrofuturism is the past, present, and future reimagined through a Black cultural lens. This was a journey to experience the work of central figures of this cultural phenomena, to explore contemporary artworks and historical objects, and learn about the connections between important figures of Afrofuturism and how it is present in our everyday lives.

Exhibition Photography: Odell Hussey and Christine Lashaw.
