Sent Away

MY ROLE
As the Experience Developer on this project, I worked in deep partnership with the curator, designer, and community members whose stories were being told  to translate content into meaningful experiences for visitors.

  • I LED THE INTERPRETIVE PLANNING process through Concept, Design Development, and Implementation phases.

  • I OUTLINED THE LABEL HIERARCHY, DRAFTED, REVISED, AND EDITED ALL EXHIBITION TEXT to visitor-friendly standards.

  • I FACILITATED CONVERSATIONS to inform storytelling about this problematic history.

This installation at The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is currently on view in the Gallery of California History

Sent Away tells the story of the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. This immersive installation includes photographs, original artwork, and an experience that illuminates the Japanese American experience in California, before, during, and after the war.

“We want to display this story in an immersive way, to give visitors a sense of claustrophobia—a sense of what the camps were like.  We want visitors to not just understand but to have a deep emotional sense of injustice about what was done. And we hope they will reflect on connections to social injustices happening today.”
—Suzanne Fischer, Associate Curator of History
