Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing

MY ROLE:
As the Experience Developer on this project, I worked in deep partnership with the curator and designers to use OMCA’s unique collection and social justice consciousness to transform what could have been a standard photography show into a much richer experience for visitors.

  • I LED THE INTERPRETIVE PLANNING process through Concept, Design Development, and Implementation phases.

  • I OUTLINED THE LABEL HIERARCHY, DRAFTED, REVISED, AND EDITED ALL EXHIBITION TEXT to visitor-friendly standards.

  • I DESIGNED EXHIBITION FLOW FOR VISITORS, OBJECT GROUPINGS, THEMATIC SECTIONS, SELECTED PHOTOGRAPHS, AND FIRST-PERSON QUOTES  in collaboration with the designer and curator.

  • I PROTOTYPED AND DEVELOPED INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES that helped to demonstrate how Lange used activism in her technique.

  • I WROTE AV SCRIPT AND CAPTIONS to co-produce a video.

This temporary exhibition at  The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) was on view in 2017.

The exhibition presented 130 photographs from the OMCA archive. Drawing upon vintage prints, unedited proof sheets, personal memorabilia, and historic objects, this exhibition took a unique approach to a beloved American photographer by reuniting her photographs with comments and quotes by the people she photographed. Lange’s photographs demonstrate how empathy and compassion—focused through art—can sway minds and prompt historical change. This exhibition had extremely high attendance and received 100% net promoter score—breaking records at OMCA.
